Five Minute Friday: Story

On Friday’s I join a few other writers for an exercise.  Write for 5 minutes on a topic that is given to us–no editing.  I confess I do spell check–because I am the worst speller ever!

Go:

We all have such similar stories–a high school friend said that this is called 6 degrees of separation–I need to go back and figure it out–but what I think it means is that we are all closer to each other than we think or might like to believe.  So here are some pages out of my “book” of life–how many do you share with me?

  • I’m a daughter and a mom.
  • My mom died when I was 35.
  • I have no sisters.
  • I am a sister, I have two brothers.
  • My dad died when I was 7–I had two stepdads.
  • I grew up on a farm.
  • I moved out when I was 17.
  • I am married to an awesome man.
  • I have moved to six states in the last 15 years.
  • I love to knit.
  • I like to cook.
  • I have babies in heaven.
  • My home is my sacred place (and my cabin).
  • I have a pontoon boat.
  • I have had more animals than I can count.
  • I put my family and my faith first.
  • I have three really good friends–who are completely different from each other.

Stop

We all have some of the same pages of one another’s stories.  Now that I “get this” I look at women with the eyes of encouragement and tolerance and hope that they will look at me the same way.

I will not fall behind . . .

I was talking with some friends at the end of Vacation Bible School–the topic was:

How could I get so far behind in just one week?

I’m a planner and a very organized person but I too was a bit overwhelmed.  I had just gotten back from a trip to the cabin (400 miles away), then a week of VBS, and now packing for another trip to a different cabin (400 miles away) in a different direction.  So this is my plan to not feel overwhelmed.

  1. Leave the house clean and tidy.  I want to remember to cover the couches so that when the cat sheds (or something gross happens), I just need to wash a couple of sheets.  I want to put some cleaner in the toilet so they will be nice when I get home.
  2. I will have a frozen dinner ready to go for the evening when we come home and thaw muffins for the morning.  Juice–can’t forget the juice.
  3. I will pay all the bills before we leave.
  4. I will have all the laundry done before we leave (maybe not folded and put away).
  5. I will sort the dirty clothes on vacation so I can start a load right away.
  6. I will only take what I really need on vacation.  That way I will have less to put away.  I will plan outfits to wear, that I like, not just randomness.
  7. I will see if the sitter is available the day after I get back so I can go grocery shopping.  After we are gone on long trips the kids just like to get their “nests” back in order.
  8. I will spend 15 minutes a day on vacation deleting emails that I know I don’t need–that way I won’t come home to an inbox that is overflowing.  Maybe I should take time to subscribe to all the extras I never open . . .
  9. No matter how crazy things get I will keep my “15 minutes of quiet time” and reflect on my blessings and pray for others.
  10. I will enjoy the time away with my family knowing that I won’t feel overwhelmed and burdened by responsibilities.

I did forget one thing–on vacation I’m going to try to knit a top-down Raglan sweater for my sweet girl–it required several swatches for gauge and pattern stitching (and lots of math)–I digress–I like to have a knitting project that I’m really excited about to start while on vacation–I know I’ll have some time to knit in the car and our mornings are slower on vacation.  One year I brought a book that I wanted to read–just something for me.  I do this because even though I change locations, my job as a Mom come with me–breakfast, lunch, dinner, cleaning and managing kids does not disappear–so I like to plan just something a little nice for myself.

Thank you God for Lake Superior, what a beautiful place you have created.

Today I’m linking up with Thankful Thursdays–I’m thankful the weekend is almost here!

WIP: Why a blog?

I have spent most of my life writing.  My earliest memory was in 3rd grade–my teacher let me write and re-write all the Winnie-the-Pooh books and change the endings as I saw fit.  As the other kids filled out pages and pages of worksheets I wrote my stories.  I often sat off by myself and wrote.  I’m not sure why I was allowed this luxury but if I had to guess it was because my Dad died when I was in 2nd grade and I didn’t handle it very well . . .

After reworking most of the children’s book I had read I moved onto my own writing.  I had pen pals, wrote essays, wrote for the school newspapers, wrote, wrote and wrote.  It could have been that we lived out in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do . . .

As an adult I tried to freelance but that is hard to make ends meet, so I kept my day/night jobs and wrote in the off times.  I discovered that the only real way to be a writer would be to use my science/medical background and become a medical writer–I did that by boldly telling people that “I’m a medical writer” and they gave me a job.  And then another job and then I started to freelance again and before I knew it I was writing for real money.

When I left the work force to stay home and have my kids I kept writing, pregnancy journals, baby books, scrapbooking pages . . . and then I started a blog because a friend said that I should.  I followed her advice and began to write–but the words didn’t come like they had in the past. I didn’t know what I should write and who would care?  It began as a gratidude blog always ending with “Thank you God for . . . ”  Then I noticed that friends kept asking me the same questions over and over . . . then I thought “what if I answer them in a blog”–brilliant.  Except that millions of others have blogs too!

How will I move this blog forward?  It started out as “in everything give thanks” but then I moved from Blogger to WordPress I thought I would change the name–it needed to be about having joy in how I live–hence the name joyful living.  I’m still not sure about it–a work in progress.  I am certain that joyfulmombaude.com is the best name for my website!  Baby steps.  As I learn the ins and outs of blogging I want to keep my family and faith first and the blog somewhere on the long list of things.  I want to keep it authentic and in perspective.  I want to write as the Spirit moves me.

I want to inspire women

  • to look at the world differently
  • to promote your own style of creativity–we are ALL creative beings
  • be the best they can be where they are
  • to help motivate–to just get up in the morning or try something new
  • share experiences that will help us lighten our loads
  • learn new things
  • to support each other in our individual choices.

I blog because I love to write.  I will continue to write everything from knitting patterns to inquiry based curriculums for the new 2012 standards.  I try to live my life as if God were in the room with me and I write the same way.  I think of my blog as a conversation with women–I really believe that we all have something in common–we all have pages out of each others book.

Thank you God, for giving me a little bit of talent and lots of desire to share your loving grace with those who read my words.

Today I’m linking up with WIPWednesday .  I consider this blog a “work in progress.”

I’m also linking to because my life is blooming because of Him!
