Writer=Occupation or Hobby

This is from a post I wrote in July of this year–it describes why I blog and how it is a “work in progress”–then I came across this name on the web–Jeff Goins.  Jeff’s picture kept looking at me in an interesting mix of blogs . . . so finally I clicked on him!  What a blessing on click can be!

(THIS IS FROM JULY 2012)  I have spent most of my life writing.  My earliest memory was in 3rd grade–my teacher let me write and re-write all the Winnie-the-Pooh books and change the endings as I saw fit.  As the other kids filled out pages and pages of worksheets I wrote my stories.  I often sat off by myself and wrote.  I’m not sure why I was allowed this luxury but if I had to guess it was because my Dad died when I was in 2nd grade and I didn’t handle it very well . . .

After reworking most of the children’s books I had read I moved onto my own writing.  I had pen pals, wrote essays, wrote for the school newspapers, wrote, wrote and wrote.  It could have been that we lived out in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do . . .

As an adult I tried to freelance but that is hard to make ends meet, so I kept my day/night jobs and wrote in the off times.  I discovered that the only real way to be a writer would be to use my science/medical background and become a medical writer–I did that by boldly telling people that “I’m a medical writer” and they gave me a job.  And then another job and then I started to freelance again and before I knew it I was writing for real money.  (to read more click here)

(NOW) When I started looking at the goinswriter.com website–I felt at home.  I felt as though Jeff spoke to my heart about my writing–I read his FREE book “A Writer’s Manefestio” and felt empowered.  I knew that I had a message that I wanted to share–not just a recipe or a cool project.  A few weeks after “finding” Jeff–he offered the Tribe Writer’s online course–I didn’t think twice about signing up–and I’m so glad that I did!

The class started and I was slow to participate–I didn’t feel like I belonged.  In my mind I am a writer but to the world I’m not–I’m a Mom with a bunch of kids, who home schools . . . I am all of those things AND I’m a Writer.

The course can take someone from: the idea of being a writer to being a published author in 8 weeks.  If that is what you desire–or it can help you hone your voice, find your tribe, discover your platform, all the while being part of a group of writers who are having the same exact struggles.

Jeff Goins in launching the class again–you can read about it here.  Today is the last day for registration!!  Click here to register!

My fellow tribe writers James, Joan, Bryan, Sundi Jo, Stacey write about how the course has changed their writing–we all came together (a couple 100 of us) for different reasons through the love of writing and wanting to make a difference.

If you want to become a better writer, take it to the next level or make a difference in ways you aren’t sure about . . . this class is for you.

Be Blessed.  I pray that we grow into finding our purpose that serves Him.

Cooking for the Crew

I really enjoy the Ultimate Recipe Swap–I know I say that every week–but I do.  This week on the schedule is Company Dinners.

I have 6 in my family plus my brother’s families the total reaches 17!  That doesn’t happen very often anymore–ok–it never happens anymore but when it did I loved cooking for all those folks.  I enjoy cooking for larger crowds and have come up with some interesting ideas of presenting the ordinary–into something a little special.  I always enjoy having friends over.  When we open our homes and hearts to prepare a simple meal or a banquet, when we cook with love, when we make the chore of cooking into an extension of gratefulness for our bounty–dinner begins to look different.  We may not be multiplying loaves of bread and fish, turning water into wine or celebrating the Last Supper–but we can seek the everyday miracles of joy, abundance, grace and thanksgiving.

I love my guides–since I do not really follow recipes–these options can work with very large groups or just my own 6.

My White Bean Chili

My White Bean Chili

  • Red Beef Chili with the fixin’s–sour cream, cheese, cornbread, nacho chips, guacamole, crackers, crusty bread, polenta, green onion, rice and pasta
  • White Bean and Chicken Chili–with the same fixin’s as above
  • Very Veggie chili–I have had a 3 chili party–it was a lot of fun.
  • Baked Potato Bar–bacon, cheese, sour cream, broccoli, chili, or spinach and feta–endless choices
  • Fajita/tortilla  bar–I grill or roast peppers, mushrooms, spinach, onions, chicken, beef, and cheese.  I like tiny little tortillas–they look so cute.
  • Breakfast for dinner–French Toast Bake, Quiche, fruit salad, mimosa–yum, yum!
  • Baked Chicken Breast, with roasted potatoes and a simple salad–not fancy but can be prepped ahead of time, plated easily, and it gives lots of time for visiting with friends.
  • I love a great Salad Bar–almost everything can be prepped ahead of time and it gives me the opportunity to use every bowl in my China cabinet.  I have done themed Salads–like Caesar or the Ultimate Garden.
  • My mother-in-law makes Lasagna with garlic bread and a Salad
  • My sister-in-law makes beef and pork in the same crock pot and serves with potluck sides . . . I love potluck side dishes!
  • One time I did pizza to order (did you notice I said ONE time).  It was an awesome dinner but we all ate at different times . . . the concept is good but my execution was less than desirable.  I have not attempted this again–and probably won’t.

I cook breakfast, lunch and dinner each day–we eat our meals together–at a table, say grace . . . light candles.  We talk about our day.  Our meal time has become a special time for us to be together as we gather–three times a day.  It is a blessing to me.  I have grown to appreciate this gift.

Be Blessed.

broken and blessed

then Jesus blessed the bread and then broke it . . . I go to Mass a few times a week and I alway cross myself at that moment–do this in remembrance of me . . . I cross myself again.  Some days I wish I could just stop Mass at that moment until I felt like I understood it–I want to understand the mystery!  or at least be able to reflect on that moment.  Jesus how do I eucharisto?

Today is 12/12/12.  The last time in my life that I will ever see a sequence of numbers like this.  I want to celebrate–so I have decided that I will begin living a life of counting my blessings.  I’ve sort of already started–my 11-year-old gave me a jump-start!

I was cooking in the kitchen–working hard to make a phenomenal Sunday dinner–it was a special birthday dinner . . . I was taking extra care in ever detail when I saw the blue soccer  ball fly through the air–I covered my head thinking it would knock over one of the 3  hot pots on the stove or knock over a gravy boat filled too high or smash the yeast rolls . . . then I heard the clang and the crash.

The blue soccer ball hit the ceiling, landed on the top of the fridge and rolled onto ALL of my Christmas cups–the ones I have been collecting for 20 years!  I knew from the sound that there was breakage.

one of my collection

one of my collection (this is the mug–but it really fell into the other mug and then onto the floor . . .)

My son acted as if were no big deal–just one cup broke–“and the cup isn’t even broken just the handle!”  I went from 0 to 60 a couple of times until I was well into warp speed!

It wasn’t about the cup–well, it sort of was–I was mad!

  • it wasn’t the best time to break a cup
  • the cup broke all over the other cups requiring lots of washing (because after such a big dinner the dishwasher would be full)
  • I remembered the day I bought that particular cup
  • his attitude was horrible
  • I have said a million times “no balls in the kitchen”–I do allow dribbling/foot skills in the house–but NOT in the kitchen and no kicking again walls
  • I was trying to get dinner on the table, in the dining room, on the second Sunday of Lent, for a birthday dinner AND I wanted everything to be PERFECT.

In the brokenness of the cup I am blessed.  I am blessed that I have a wonderful son.  Who has legs to play soccer.  I remind myself that I prayed for this son.  Who can teach me the meaning of abundance.  I am so incredibly blessed.

In that moment of cleaning the mess of the blue soccer ball and the holly Christmas mug–I found the meaning of my life.

  • I live abundantly–I have everything I need.  I have more cups than I could ever want! (the loaves and fishes story)
  • I give thanks, in everything.
  • I found that anger doesn’t get me where I want to be–I want to seek joy!
  • I serve God by serving my family JOYFULLY.  When I fail at that I fail at serving God–when my intention moves towards perfection it moves from God.  When I do things for God, then it becomes perfect.
  • May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him.  Romans 15:13.
  • I still think balls should stay OUT of the kitchen!

So on this day of 12/12/12 I want to my life to move forward with intention, joyfulness, purpose, and most of all trust that when I give thanks, in everything–God will be at the end of my prayer.  God is my safety net!  I want to practice intentional gratitude–not just on sunny days when my life seems perfect–but on my hardest days.  I know God has been with me on my darkest days.

that dang blue soccer ball!

that dang blue soccer ball–this is where the ball hides so it won’t be kicked, break dishes and then banished to the garage!  (and no I didn’t clean before I took this pictures–this is a real blog, with real pictures of a real house)

I am broken and blessed.  I thank God each day for my blessings.  I have an awesome house vs. my Ford Escort that I lived in–with two dogs and a cat!  I have these incredible children and a wonderful husband who love me–for me.  I look at everything as a gift to be treasured, respected and honored.

My life is a joy!  hard at moments, I lose my temper, I feel emotions other than love, peace and joy, but more and more those negative emotions are fleeting and I find myself seeking joy, grace and giving thanks, in everything.  I chose to be joyful, loving, kind, respectful, and thankful in everything I do.

Be Blessed.  My prayer is that you will feel the love and faithfulness of a God who wants to show you his abundance just for you.  For your own purpose.
